Uncle Chico Newsletter # 277

The practical and real example of success from breeders who follow CAFIB’s Breeding Philosophy.

Such breeders make their enormous and indispensable contribution to maintaining the True PURE Fila.

Excellent example: Guardiães do Caracu Kennel, by Marcus Flávio Vilasboas Moreira and Wilson Vilela, from Minas Gerais.

Attention: with Typicality and Function a canine Pure Breed could be perpetuated. But only with specific Function, even a mongrel could do !

The inventor of the new “fila” pretends not to know the CAFIB Fila Qualification ! And mix and post photos with daydreams and misunderstandings !

33 - Introdução Abóbora FP

My dear Fila Brasileiro (FB) and CAFIB friends,

Uncle Chico, after having divulged the fact that not even Sobraci, ( = a dog notary Brazilian club similar to CBKC+FCI) that issues pedigrees for OFB, that is, for the so-called modern-“fila”, recognizes this new type of dog experience as a pure breed dog ( see details in English in Question # 541 in Uncle Chico article https://filabrasileirochicopeltierblog.wordpress.com/2020/03/28/post-730-ask-uncle-chico-206-did-you-know-that-not-even-sobraci-recognizes-ofb-as-a-purebred-dog-brand-new-information-the-true-brazilian-aboriginal-dog-was-finally-discovered-a/  ), I would like to emphasize that breeding any purebred dog, in a serious and honest way, is synonymous with improving, improving and always improving

Always remembering that improving does not mean modifying, but improving what already exists.

In search of getting closer and closer to the ideal embodied in the Breed Standard.

And in the case of Fila Brasileiro this Standard is that of CAFIB, which was written in 1978 by Dr. Paulo Santos Cruz, with the fundamental help of the founders of CAFIB, among others, of Américo Cardoso, Airton Campbell and Luiz Maciel.

The CAFIB Breed Standard is an objective to be pursued by its members and breeders.

But it will always be very difficult to achieve in its fullness. For there will always be a “but” or a “however”…

There will always be, however small, a simple flaw or a simple detail to be improved …

For this reason, CAFIB Qualification has four levels: Regular, Good, Very Good and Optimal.

Too bad that the defender of other new types and new experiences with crossbreed dogs tries to take advantage of the existence of these four Qualifications, non-ethically and indecently, by posting, mixing and disseminating photos of CAFIB Filas as if all the photos were of dogs of Optimal Qualification. For me it is just another desperate attitude of this person. After all, anyone who knows a little about the history of CAFIB knows that in just 42 years, just under 20 Gold Medals have been awarded = Optimal Qualification.

The CAFIB Standard has been, since 1978, a set of characteristics and descriptions that must be respected, followed and preserved in order to ensure that the parents of the litters obtained by CAFIB breeders are increasingly closer to this Standard, in accordance with its specifications, so that these puppies can have, with each generation, a greater chance of qualitative improvement. This is called Genetic Improvement, that is, the so-called Improvement. In fact, printed in the name of CAFIB !!!

Rigorous selection is the basis for a serious and lasting breeding. And you must understand a Whole: phenotype + temperament + character. And the Function is part of this Whole.

CAFIB’s Analyses of Phenotype and Temperament (APT), as well as its Expos and the resulting Classifications and Qualifications, are practical and real examples of paths to be followed. The serious breeder must learn from the correct past and never intend to egocentrically invent a new experience or repeat past mistakes. A Second Great Miscegenation should never repeat the First Great Miscegenation against the Fila Brasileiro, that started in the 70s and 80s, whose sequels are still found today in the FB and “fila” squad of the CBKC-FCI.

Therefore, those who wish to ascertain only the Function of a dog are mistaken, as they are unable to imagine and breed the Fila Brasileiro as a Whole. Likewise, those who think that the CAFIB Expo is a beauty competition are mistaken. In contrast, the Classification and Qualification of FBs on tracks are an example and objective to be pursued by all breeders.

But unfortunately, there are clubs and groups of people who are not even able to hold a single Expo per year. So, they disdain CAFIB. And they are dedicated only to social networks, as Facebook and web. Then they start to criticize and not to breed. And, worse, just in a virtual world.

But it is noted in practice that those would-be breeders who only aim to achieve a certain Function, allow themselves to crossbreed dogs with any type of phenotype and of any breed. They mix their dogs even with mestizos dogs and mongrels because, incompetent, they only have the excuse to pursue and breed only the Function. These people, unable to breed a FB in the fullness of their typicality, hide and apologize behind an alleged Function, which is really intrinsic to CAFIB’s genuine Purebred Dog, but which can even be performed by others dogs.

This has been going on for hundreds of years. This is a novelty only for beginners and neophytes. The performance of a given Function is not strictly a Pure Breed requirement. Many breeds, mestizos dogs and even mongrel dogs successfully perform the most varied Functions, however they do not possess the legitimate typicality of the Pure Breeds Dog focused on those functions. In summary, the functional dog may not be typical, but the typical specimen is necessarily functional. Recalling that the meaning of typicality is the closest proximity to the breed characteristics described in each Breed Standard.

Therefore, Uncle Chico would like to present the excellent breeding of the Guardiães do Caracu Kennel, which for so many years has been following the guidance of the CAFIB Breeding Philosophy. Thus, the following is the full text received from Marcus Flávio Vilasboas Moreira and Wilson Vilela specially written to be part of this article:

Uncle Chico,

THE GUARDIÃES DO CARACU Kennel was officially founded in 1998, and the name comes from our family tradition in the breeding of Caracu cattle.

But our contact with the Fila Brasileiro breed comes long before that. When, as a child, I was presented by my father with a puppy named Yanga da Jaguara, this was my first copy of Pure Fila and it so much impelled me to love this wonderful Brazilian canine breed.

We also had Fila Brasileiro on our farms, but our careful selection of the breed started only after the acquisition of the dog Orquidea da Voz do Vento, which obtained the awards for Best Female and Best Temperament at the 1st CAFIB Expo of Fila Brasileiro in the city of Itanhandu in 2005. At this event, we became partners of CAFIB and started a successful and outstanding trajectory in the main expos of Fila Brasileiro throughout the country.

I even take the opportunity to thank the CAFIB Family, especially its Board, for all the lessons learned, guidance and care received in these many years lived together. In this way, we will be forever grateful for the guidance received from CAFIB.

The partnership with dear friend and partner José Wilson Vilela started more than 10 years ago, this happened in a natural way, right after the acquisition by some dogs from our Kennel.

It is worth mentioning that Mr. Wilson already owned some dogs, most notably the matriarch Rosinha Acangussu das Gerais.

As a result of this conviviality, a great friendship arose that boosted our joint interest in the selection and improvement of the Fila Brasileiro.

Through my assistance, Mr. Wilson, deepened his knowledge of the Breed Standard. Stubbornly sought constant breed improvement, mainly through the direction of mating and, since then, he started to register dogs with our affix. In this way, a partnership of friendship and success emerged.

This society made possible the increasing qualitative and quantitative increase in the Guardiães do Caracu squad.

Proof of this were the most important achievements of the Fila Brasileiro recently obtained: Best Breeder of the CAFIB World Championship 2019 and Best Exhibitor of the CAFIB World Championship 2019. I emphasize that due to our participation in the World Championship, I gave up judging the CAFIB Expos that took place in 2019.

Together, Mr. Wilson and I, we know that we still have a long and hard work for the breed to walk. But supported by technical knowledge, seriousness, commitment and the blessings of God this will continue to happen.

Kind regards,

José Wilson Vilela – Owner and Partner and Marcus Flávio Vilasboas Moreira – Owner, Judge at CAFIB, Judge at UNIFILA, Former President of UNIFILA in Management 2011 to 2014.

Uncle Chico takes the opportunity to let readers know what Marcus Moreira thought about the “black-fila” when he was president of Unifila. Read in English by clicking:

My dear friends, therefore, below is the undisputed proof of success and examplepractical and real of the Guardiães do Caracu Kennel which follows the CAFIB’s Breeding Philosophy:

  • The last three photos from OFB non-type of Pure Filas. OFB = modern-“fila“.

After all, the decision is yours. After all, what do you prefer?

 Best regards, Chico Peltier.
