Letter of introduction of Jonas Tadeu Iacovantuono, CAFIB
Member since 1987 and Judge of CAFIB since 1992, for Fila
Brasileiro breeders from the USA, mainly to those who will
participate in the 1st Fila Exhibition America to be held on
October 11 and 12, 2014 in Pennsylvania, USA, organized by
Juan Carlos Hernandez and Claudio Rufino.
I was born on November 05, 1949 in Guaratinguetá, SP. I was raised up to 10 years of age in Carvalhos, MG, in the countryside, where I had my first contact with the Fila Brasileiro: Sheik, buckskin yellow dog with black mask snout, calm and confident and Tiger, striped over reddish yellow background of very strong temperament.
Returning to Guaratinguetá, I stayed until the age of 19 when I left for studies and work. Throughout this journey I became Social Advisor specializing me in Social Education, Leisure and Sports Management by SESC – Social Service of Commerce.
I returned to my hometown in 1975 to work at SESC and then Bradesco Bank – Private Pension and from 1983 I started to exercise public work, first at the City Hall as a specialist in Sports, Tourism and Leisure reaching the position of Municipal Secretary from 2000 to 2004. Later I closed the journey of Civil Servant as Assistant Cabinet next to City Hall.
Throughout this time, I was gradually regaining contact with the Fila Brasileiro. In the 70s, at Kennel Tangará Açu I acquired Nativa do Tangará Açu, female that left no descendants, but excelled by winning trophies at the old BKC (Brazilian Kennel Club) for its typical phenotype and enviable temperament.
Due to the enormous miscegenation that occurred in Fila registered and controlled in the old BKC I became CAFIB member and in the 80s, precisely in 1987, already having at home Achara de Jawa, an “araçá” of very strong temperament descendant from Hercules, through Walter de Souza Novaes Nunes, owner of Canil (kennel) Jawa and my cousin, I meet Sebastião Pereira Monteiro Júnior, nickname Tião, and Jurandir Meirelles, nickname Jurinha.
The dear Journalist and friend Paulo Godinho very honored us to devote a chapter to the four of us in his book “Fila Brasileiro, A Gift from the Stars” (see in HTTP://blogdopaulogodinho.blogspot.com or by email email@example.com ) treating us as the “Valley Musketeers” because after that first meeting we managed, by affiliating ourselves to CAFIB, to do a good and useful work with and for the Fila breed. The Canil Jawa was our experiment to select and improve, getting the title of Brazilian Champion. The Canil Jawa also achieved, through the exemplary Infante de Jawa, the Brazilian Tri-Championship of Best Temperament. Also important in this action was our involvement with other CAFIB kennels which we established partnerships, such as kennels Ibituruna, Engenho Velho, Hisama, Boa Sorte and Quatis. From this work there emerged Canil Itapoã which won the title of Brazilian Tri-champion and Canil Cunhatã.
During this period, from 1988 to 1996, we forwarded into Brazil, Tião and I, discovering breeders, associating them to CAFIB and disseminating the CAFIB Breeding Philosophy. In 1992 we became CAFIB judges and started to check on the litters, analyze dogs in various regions and encourage exhibitions and often judge them. So we went through the states of Rio Grande do Sul, Goiás, Ceará and interior São Paulo, Minas Gerais and Rio de Janeiro.
The partnership Jonas – Tião held dozens of exhibitions from 1988 to 1995:
1988, 11 Exhibitions; 1989, 12 Exhibitions; 1990, 11 Exhibitions; 1991, 11 Exhibitions; 1992, 12 Exhibitions; 1993, 16 Exhibitions (with enrollment of 450 Filas in the year’s total). This year, CAFIB held two more expos in the USA and a regional meeting in Governador Valadares with 43 registered Fila Brasileiro dogs. 1994, 15 Exhibitions (with 624 registered Filas). This year there were two expos in Guaratinguetá with the participation of 126 Filas in the first and 64 in the second expo. 1995, 15 Exhibitions (with 982 registered dogs, being 693 Filas approved and registered. In Guaratinguetá 107 Filas attended and were enrolled Filas. This year Governador Valadares hosted two exhibitions with the presence of 78 Filas in the first and 60 in the second expo.
In this period several cities made their first Analyses and Exhibitions, encouraged by us, including: Fortaleza – CE; Goiânia – GO; Cataguazes, Uberlândia, Belo Horizonte and Sete Lagoas in Minas Gerais; Pindamonhangaba, Guarulhos, Cruzeiro and Aparecida in SP and Valença and Rezende in RJ.
In the years 1993/95 Guaratinguetá and Governador Valadares hosted two exhibitions each.
Since the Guaratinguetá expo of 1996 its trophies are named Sebastião Pereira Monteiro Jr. and since Expo Guaratinguetá of 1997 its trophies for Best Temperament are named Walter de Souza Novaes Nunes, a CAFIB tribute to these two breeders who really helped improve the CAFIB squad.
Between 1992 and 1996 the Regional CAFIB-VALE held 24 regional meetings with the participation of 887 dogs, being enrolled in these 24 meetings in total 653 Filas (average of 27 Filas per encounter). These meetings were held in the cities of Aparecida (4), Lorena (1), Cachoeira Paulista (1), Cruzeiro (3) and Guaratinguetá (15).
Of 1996 onwards there is a quantitative fall in the region, but excellent results are seen from CAFIB with prevalence of Canil Itapoã owned by Giovani Eder Florêncio Carvalho, Canil Alto Quatis owned by Half Fonseca Marassi, Canil Cunhatã owned by Genoí Faria and more recently the return of Canil Jawa now under the administration of Fabiano Gonçalves Nunes.
With the early demise of Tião in 1996 and Walter in 1997, I was naturally I depressed. But the involvement with CAFIB and its members gave me strength and it was possible to continue the way of the preservation of the Fila Breed. I continued to, in accordance with the regional possibilities, verify litters, to analyze samples wherever they were, either in kennels or not. I went through dozens of cities in the States of São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Minas Gerais and Bahia, where in 2002 Canil Alufam was established, CAFIB’s embryo in the Northeast where today Canil Nonafib in Natal, RN also stands out.
On this journey that lasts to the present time, had excellent opportunities of involvement with the Fila Brasileiro, since, in addition to the natural assignments as a judge, I could hold lectures and field activities in Goiânia, GO, in Itanhandu, MG, Brasília, DF and Malaga, Spain where I judged out of invitation of friend Jaime Perez Mahuenda, president of CAFIBE-Spain. I also ministered many lectures about the Fila, being the most important ones carried through in Salvador, BA in 2004 and 2008 and in the current year of 2014 I lectured in Itanhandu, MG and Brasilia-BSB.
At the invitation of Canil Itanhandu, long-time partner, I could participate in the construction of the website Standard of the Fila Brasileiro, a web didactic and visual work about the Fila, where I also write articles about the Psychic System, Temperament and addressing with rationale with the miscegenation that was imposed to the Fila Brasileiro. (see at http://www.cao-filabrasileiro.com/#!__fila-brasileiro-desq).
In Guaratinguetá where I knew CAFIB and as its Regional Representative, I co-ordinate the exhibitions carried through since 1987 up to 2013, already setting appointments for 2015 at the 100th National Expo of CAFIB that will be a great event with many celebrations.
Now I have the chance to go to the USA to judge a CAFIB Exhibition, which honors me and makes me very happy and where I hope to present my contribution to the participants. Right now I teach in the Sistema Tableau de Ensino in São José dos Campos, SP. In the partnerships established with the Brazilian Federal Government (PRONATEC – National Program for Technical Qualification of the Federal Government for Young and Adults) and State Government (VENCE – State Government Program of the State of São Paulo for technical qualification of high school youngsters), I’m graduated in History with specializations in Human Resources, teach classes for Technical Qualification at intermediate level for Nursing courses, Radiology, Pharmacy, Security and Logistics in the disciplines of Entrepreneurship, Ethics, Administrative Management, Organizations of Stocks and Materials.
I keep alongside CanilJawa, today under the command of Fabiano Gonçalves Nunes, son of Walter and my godson, young enthusiast of the Fila Brasileiro, with broad knowledge and natural picker of good Filas. Currently, only the Fila named Buana do Balacobaco lives with me, which attentive, valiant and sweet, takes care of watching the space where I inhabit with 1400 m2.
